Description of Project Progress |
|
The overall goal of the Skills, Opportunities and
Self-Reliance (SOS) project is to enhance the lives and
development of orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs) and to
reduce their social and economic impact on households and
communities in Namibia. The International Youth Award (IYA)
provides numerous opportunities to young people to be
involved in self-awareness and interpersonal activities.
The IYA managed to produce their own DVD which captures the
basics and immense potential of the program. This DVD will
be used as an introductory tool during the orientation and
recruitment of new participants. It can also serve as a case
study demonstrating impact to current and prospective
donors.
The service component of the program gives the young people
an opportunity to prepare for and give service to others.
With the help of community volunteers, places are identified
for the participants to render a voluntary service such as
old age homes, children’s homes or any other place where
they as IYA participants can do and give something back to
their community. Their involvement has given tremendous
satisfaction to them and it gives them a sense of
belongingness. The children willingly and happily do this.
The philosophy shared is that no one is so rich that he/she
cannot receive and so poor that that he/she cannot give.
The NTA conducted an Audit of the KAYEC Windhoek's
vocational training premises, systems and workshops. The
assessors were highly complimentary about the well-
organized nature of the programmes, the quality of training,
the high student output and the application of skills to the
needs of the industry. |
