SA develops coding, robotics curricula for Grade R-9- article

The South African government is developing curricula for coding and robotics for grades R to 9.

So said minister of basic  Angie Motshekga. “To  a sustainable industrialisation and keep pace with the world, South Africa is developing coding as well as robotics curricula to be included in GET [general education and training] from Grade R-9,” said Motshekga.

She said the curricula will  learners with an understanding of coding and robotics, and will develop their skills and competencies to prepare them for the fourth industrial revolution.

“The curricula will ensure our schooling system produces learners with the foundations for future work, and equip them with skills for the changing world,” the minister said.

According to Motshekga, the coding curriculum will develop learners’ ability to solve problems, think critically, and work collaboratively and creatively; function in a digital and information-driven world; apply digital and ICT skills; and transfer these skills to solve everyday problems.

She added that learners will also become a new generation of creative, innovative thinkers that can use coding to express their ideas, and adopt a culture of being self-directed, life-long learners.

The minister added the DBE is also working with civil society, academic institutions and businesses, such as Africa Teen Geeks.

She pointed out that with the support of Africa Teen Geeks, UNISA, North West University, ORT South Africa and Globenet, the DBE developed a framework for coding Grade R-9.

Google, Teen Geeks and other businesses through Africa are supporting the DBE to develop a coding platform that utilises artificial intelligence and machine learning to customise teaching and learning.

Student aptitude

Motshekga said customised teaching is the direct opposite of the one-size-fits-all methodology or philosophy.

“It considers individual student aptitude, learning speed, background, response and other variables. It processes the data in real-time and provides feedback to the teacher, so that the teacher can recognise flagging student attention or poor response immediately, and take corrective actions. This will improve student participation and, in the process, the overall results.”

She explained that machine learning will be able to explain the concepts as well as set goals for individual students.

On the other hand, she added, teachers will be able to track whether the students are able to digest the concepts.

“Based on that feedback, educators can change or modify the methodology, curriculum or topics accordingly. And, the result is more accurate and targeted for individuals. In simple terms, machine learning does the analytics based on individual student data, and makes the decision-making process automatic and uniform.”

She said this coding platform will need to be available in all 11 languages, ensuring rural and township children will be introduced to coding and robotics in their mother tongue, in line with government’s mission to provide an inclusive education accessible to all.

According to Motshekga, the robotics curriculum will have a strong foundation in engineering in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and will enable learners to build and operate robots through programming code.

Building computers

She noted the robotics curriculum will not require any infrastructure or devices, but will need maker spaces to provide hands-on, creative ways to encourage students to design, experiment, build and invent; for example, through cardboard construction activities.

“The projects will become more challenging as the grades progress. In Grade 9, the learners will be taught how to build a computer from scratch. This will not only develop STEM skills, but also contribute to effectively developing children’s creativity, critical thinking, design thinking and digital skills.

“This will ensure SA develops learners who are makers and inventors who will contribute to building an innovative culture in South Africa.”

Motshekga pointed out that teachers are going to be key in teaching this new subject, and the plan is to train at least three teachers in each of the 16 000 primary schools to teach coding.

“The implementation of coding in the system will start with a pilot in 1 000 schools in 2020 in five provinces for Grade 7 to 9,” she concluded.

Your willingness to assist has played a vital role in the growth of our organization and goes beyond just pure numbers, as lives are impacted. Without your engagement and partnership  we could not have helped 6 800 beneficiaries this year.

 

 Achievements:

59 post matrics gained an average 92.5% pass rate in the Second Chance programme (rewriting of matric mathematics and science). As a result of ORT SA’s intervention, almost half of these students have just completed their 1st year at university!

600 primary and high school pupils in ORT SA’s Extra Mural Coding Clubs, up from 200 Grade 4-8’s in 2017

60 teachers completed the introduction to coding course with ORT SA

200 youth placed in a 1-year work experience positions

6 young women received bursaries to study Education through ORT SA’s affiliate, STET Foundation.

34 unemployed youth learned IT skills including the accredited Cisco IT Essentials

7 high school pupils obtained the Cisco IT Essentials certification

15 Disabled youth get a chance at learning how to run their own business

1285 people participated in an eclectic variety of talks and interesting events which took place at the ORT SA Academy in 2018. This includes an art exhibition, a ‘storytelling’ workshop, digital workshops, a work summit for youth, business training, captains of industry in the ORT SA Boardroom: Simon Sussman (Woolworths), Sylvester Chauke (entrepreneur), James Teeger ( Oppenheimer Trust),

1000 pupils celebrated Mandela Day with ORT SA and Sage

320 teachers trained in Mathematics

2408 pupils assisted in Mathematics in class by ORT SA Facilitators

450 high school pupils trained in New Venture Creation (to start and grow sustainable businesses)

47 new small businesses joined the ORT Jet training programme

Other exciting happenings:

  • An historic affiliation agreement signed between the SABJE and World ORT
  • Overseas visitors and overseas visits for ORT SA affiliates
  • Fundraising events such as the first ever Spinnathon ™ in SA and the 45th ORT SA Golf Classic
  • ORT SA archives and library organized by a volunteer librarian.

The NGO space world-wide is becoming increasingly more difficult to navigate. In South Africa, Education receives the most CSI funding which makes the competition fierce for non-profits. But with your assistance, we are up for the challenge in 2019.

ORT SA & BIDCORP’S MATHS BOFFINS IN THE MAKING

The positive outcome of measurements between a pre-test administered at the beginning of the 2nd term and a post-test at the end of the 2nd term of this ORT SA Bidcorp maths programme in Ivory Park, north of Johannesburg,  leaves no doubt that the year-end results are going to show a significant increase in both the average mark and % pass.

The programme commenced in 2017 and now supports 17 Grade 9 Mathematics teachers as well as 180 learners through an extra- tuition programme called the Learner Enhancement Programme (LEP).

The LEP component aims to provide support to selected Grade 9 learners, empowering them with mathematical skills that will enable them to maximise performance in mathematics.The learner intervention is focused on developing learners so that ultimately  doors will open for tertiary  qualifications for them in STEM fields.

The teacher development component seeks to improve mathematics outcomes in project schools, by improving curriculum delivery in the classroom. To achieve this, teachers attend preparatory workshop sessions where they interrogate curriculum content prescribed for the next period. To ensure effective implementation, they are also visited in the classroom for coaching and mentoring by ORT’s Mathematics experts.

With the continued support from the corporate, the project aspires to produce quality results at matric in 2021 which will pave the way for successful career paths for these young people.

95% PASS RATE FOR ORT SA’s ‘SECOND CHANCE’ CLASS OF 2016

The  ORT SA Second Chance Class of 2016 obtained a whopping 95%  for their maths and science matric re-write!

Nine candidates improved their Mathematics marks by more than 80% and 10 candidates improved their Physical Science by more than 80%. Four candidates improved both subjects by more than 80%. The highest % increase in Mathematics is 182% while Physical Science recorded the highest increase of 100%.

Head of the Teacher Empowerment Department at ORT SA, Mpho Matlala said, “I am thrilled with the improvement of results and the possibilities now open to these youngsters. We are aiming for even better results for the 2017 cohort.”
