LOOKING FOR A CAREER & HAVE NO IDEA? ORT SA CareerHub LAUNCH

β€œLast year, we promised a series of Career Guidance talks and we have actually done more than that. We have, in fact, developed the ORT SA CareerHub,” says Ariellah Rosenberg, ORT SA’s CEO, who is the visionary behind the idea.

Through a series of talks and workshops, the CareerHub will help high school students, university students, parents, teachers and even those who feel β€˜stuck’ in their path, to β€œExplore, Expose and Experience”  their way through the quagmire of choosing a career.

β€œThe choices can be dauntingΒ ,” says Rosenberg, β€œYou’re 18 years old, finished school and most probably, experiencing the β€˜end of childhood’ as you knew it. You are faced with a life-time decision, or so you feel, about your career path. All of us have been in a similar situation… β€˜the road not taken’… β€˜jobs of the future’… so much pressure for relatively young souls that have being part of the schooling system for more than a decade. A system where almost everything is dictated, including your dress code, the time you wake up and the curriculum. Now, you have to decide yourself which path to take. If to learn: what to learn, where and when? β€œ

The ORT SA CareerHub will be focused on Exploring the individual’s skills, attributes and strengths when seeking a career path, Exposing participants to the jobs of the future and giving them the Experience with practical workshops.

The CareerHub is launching on 2 April 2019 with ORT SA’s IT Ambassador, the internationally renowned writer, analyst and technology commentator, Arthur Goldstuck and ORT SA IT Ambassador, speaking about β€˜jobs of the future’.

Career Guidance Blog #5 – ‘Sample’ your Career Decision

You found your purpose (Blog #4) and have made the decision on the career path to take. What’s next?

If you have time, before college or university starts, why not ‘sample’ your decision. Explore it in a practical manner. This will give you an opportunity of experiencing your selected job in various ways:

  1. Take an internship or volunteer as an apprentice in a profession of your choice. Use the time to ask, explore, inquire and experience your selection.
  2. Take a MOOC (Massive, Online, Open Courses). Register for one of the MOOC platforms with one or two courses in the field chosen, and start learning. This will give you an in-depth insight into the subject matter and motivation to pursue it further. (Should it convince you away from your selected path, you have saved time and money with registering with a full qualification. In addition, you acquired a skill or knowledge that may be useful in the future.)

  3. Join Social Media professional groups of your chosen profession and become a “fly on the wall” gaining insight through their experiences. In the process you may also extend your network and search for future mentors or even employers.

This sampling could be spent during your ‘gap year’ period and make this time a meaningful part of your career selection journey
